Signature Israeli Books on Film: Apples, Doves, Aliya, and Identity
The IAC Library invites you to a Monday Night Film Series based on signature Israeli books by outstanding Israeli authors. The movies are, by turns, heartfelt, dramatic, satirical and humorous, covering different aspects of contemporary Israeli history and the country’s diverse society. The events will include introductions to the movies and the books, followed by audience discussion in English.
Join us whether you have already read the books – in Hebrew or in English - or have been “waiting for the movie”. The series include the following movies:
1. Farewell Baghdad (2013) מפריח היונים depicts the Jewish community in Iraq at the time of Israel’s War of Independence, and the abrupt end of this community, when immigration to Israel was the only salvation. (Based on the “The Dove Flyer” by Eli Amir)(Monday, January 27th 2020).
2. A Borrowed Identity (2014) זהות שאולה shows the personal and interpersonal journey of a talented, young Israeli Arab man finding his way in Israeli society. (Based on two books by Sayed Kashua, “Dancing Arabs” and “Second Person Singular”)(Monday, March 30th 2020)
3. Apples from the Dessert (2014) תפוחים מן המדבר compares two distinct Israeli communities – the urban orthodox and the rural kibbutz – through the struggle of a young woman as she makes her way in life. (Based on the book of the same title by Savyon Liebrecht.)(Monday, May 11th 2020)
4. Saleh Shabbati (1964) סאלח שבתי is an iconic film starring Chaim Topol (of “Fiddler on the Roof”) in the title role. Gentle humor and sharp satire take turns in showing the early period of mass Jewish Aliya from Arab countries. (Based on satirical columns by Ephraim Kishon)(Monday, June 1st 2020)
All movies will be shown at the Bender Jewish Community Center – 6125 Rockville MD 20852.
The movies are in Hebrew, with English subtitles.
Events start at 7:30pm.
