Group Mediator - Shira Schaffer

Shira was born and raised in a small moshav in Northern Israel called Shavei Zion. Since she can remember, education was a part of her life. Shira joined the IDF where she served as teacher soldier in the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel. She then studied in Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva, where she earned her BA in Education and Geography. After graduating, Shira worked in a boarding school as an educational counselor.

In 1999 she moved with her husband to Washington DC for a job opportunity. They lived in Rockville Maryland for 10 where Shira worked as a Hebrew teacher at the Jewish Day School, Director of the “Kol Shalom” Hebrew School, as well as an Assistant Camp Director and later as the Camp Director at the JCC of Greater Washington.

In 2010 the family moved to sunny San Diego where Shira works full time as a Hebrew Teacher and now as the Hebrew Department Chair at the San Diego Jewish Academy.

Shira joined the IAC in 2017, where she feels at home. She has facilitated 3 groups of Gvanim Manhigut- 2 in San Diego and 1 in Orange County.

She finds that teaching Hebrew, the Israeli culture, as well as the history and values of the Jewish people is her destiny.  The need to feel belonging and preserve her identity, culture and values is stronger while living in the diaspora.  She feels the importance of passing on the traditions and the values, to the next generation. This is where the Gvanim program has a big impact and therefore, she is honored to take part in this pivotal journey.
