Dr. Nachman Shai is a Knesset member of the Zionist Union (the largest opposition party), he is currently serving his third term in office, starting 2009.

Prior to his election to the Knesset, Nachman has held a variety of positions in the military, the media, and in the diplomatic and public arenas. Among them, MK Shai has served as The Israel Defense Force Chief spokesperson, with the rank of Brigadier General, during the first Gulf War. He has also served as the Director-General of the Ministry of Science, Culture and Sports, as well as the Chairperson of the Israeli Broadcasting Authority and Senior Vice President of the Jewish Federation of North America.

MK Shai is the Chairman of the Israel-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group. In this role, he was recently honored by the German government for his steadfast commitment to progressing Israeli-German relations. He is also Head of the Knesset Delegation to the International Parliamentary Union. MK Shai is a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, the Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality; he chairs the Subcommittee for National planning, and leads seven lobby groups, including the lobby for strengthening the Jewish People, the largest in the Knesset, the lobby for US-Israel relations and the lobby for Senior citizens.

Nachman Shai holds a Ph.D. in political science and communications from Bar Ilan University and has published three books: Media Wars, Caught in the Net and Hearts and Minds, which was recently published by the State University of New York.

Nachman is married to Rivka and they have three children.
