In 2006 Gil made a media history, when he trapped Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad into answering a question he posed at a United Nations press conference. It’s historic, because it became the only time the Iranian leader — who doesn’t recognize Israel’s right to exist—has ever spoken to an Israeli journalist.
Another memorable moment was the exclusive interview Gil conducted with the first Israeli astronaut, Ilan Ramon, during the Columbia mission to space. Ramon told Gil, just days before the tragedy of the Columbia, how excited he was to see the tiny country of Israel from space. It was the only TV interview Ramon gave on board the Columbia Shuttle while in space.
